Homestay Accommodations

Homestay Homestay Homestay

The Langara Homestay Program gives international students the chance to live with host families while they complete their education and gives host families the unique opportunity to welcome new people and cultures into their homes. The program has placed tens of thousands of students over the past three decades, enriching the lives of both students and families across the Lower Mainland.

Students in our homestay program are studying at Langara College or are international high school students from the Vancouver School District or Burnaby School District. They come from all over the world to study in the Lower Mainland and usually stay with their host family for two weeks to ten months, depending on their program of study.

While living in homestay, students are:

  • Provided with a furnished, private bedroom
  • Given three meals per day
  • Given use of household appliances (washer, dryer, vacuum cleaner, iron, etc.)
  • Welcomed to join in family activities and excursions
  • Encouraged to practice English with their families and to learn about Canadian culture

Langara Homestay students are encouraged to feel like part of their host families, and many develop relationships that last for years.

Thinking about becoming a Langara Homestay student?

As a homestay student, you will:

  • Be provided with information about your host family prior to arrival
  • Receive pre-arrival information to help prepare you for your homestay experience
  • Attend a homestay orientation meeting after arrival
  • Have access to on-going advice and support from Homestay staff
  • Have a 24 hour emergency contact number

While homestay can be a challenging experience as you struggle to understand a new culture, language, and adjust to a new family, we will do our best to help you adapt to your Canadian home. If problems do arise, our staff will provide counselling and support to help you resolve the issue. In most cases, problems can be solved through open communication and discussion between students and their host families.

Students who are interested in homestay can contact the Homestay Office for an application package. You will need to show a copy of your program’s Letter of Acceptance to apply. You should apply for homestay at least two months before your program start date. If you are a LEAP student, please indicate that you are interested in Homestay on your LEAP application.

Applications must be returned with the placement fee ($550), the per semester administrative fee ($150 per semester), and the first and last month’s homestay fee (currently $1300 per month, $1350 per month as of September 2024). If you want airport pick-up upon arrival, there is an additional $150 due at the time of your application.
