Next up in the Student Spotlight series is Freda Lewko. Freda has a knack for beautiful typography and has even created her own typeface! She was the Assistant Art Director and Production Artist on the print magazine and a Web Designer and QA tech for the magazine’s website.

Tell me about how you got into typography design

It all started with the Graphic Design course here at Langara — that was the first time I had ever been introduced to the realm of typography. I found it fascinating how it’s possible to produce beautiful work by simply choosing the right typefaces and using them creatively. I found that this aspect of graphic design was perfect for me to focus on as designer because making my own graphics or illustrations isn’t really my specialty.

Can you explain your creative process?

It’s different every time. Each project is unique, so I guess it makes sense that the process is suited to it. Sometimes I spend time on a place like Pinterest to gather inspiration to start with, and other times I have an idea straight away that I mock up and create more versions from.

What is your favourite typeface? (and why!)

That’s like asking what my favourite song is! I don’t really have one, but currently I’m really into a sans-serif called Eveleth. Not only are the characters beautifully shaped but all the different textures it comes in are just to die for. Not to mention it also comes with some funky shapes and icons.

You have $500 to burn, all your friends are busy and you have the whole day to yourself, what do you do?

Put it in the bank and stay at home with a good book and plenty of coffee!

If you could have dinner with anyone from history, who would it be?

Either St. Thomas Aquinas or The Beatles.

If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be?

My phone, my laptop, my Visa card, my passport, and my rosary (assuming that clothing is a given!).
