Students selected for 2018 India Connect Program

Congratulations to Lucy Morrow and Willy Sin, who have been selected to participate in the 2018 India Connect Scholarship Program. The India Connect Program is the first in a series of country-specific scholarship programs that are part of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada’s (APF Canada) larger Asia Connect Program.

Through this partnership, APF Canada and the Langara College Foundation will provide each student with a scholarship worth $10,000 Cdn to assist them with their travel and expenses during the co-op placement at Optimus Information Inc. in India.

Lucy Morrow is a second-year Bachelor of Business Administration, Marketing student who has previously travelled eight months through South East Asia. Lucy has a background working with the City of Vancouver as a lifeguard and in a local restaurant, but has never lived or worked in India before. She hopes to contribute her social media and marketing skills to the Optimus team.

“The India Connect Program gives me the opportunity to work with Optimus Information’s industry leading clients in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing business technology environment,” said Morrow. “Working at Optimus Information will be an incredible opportunity to expand my global network of contacts, jump-start my career in marketing, and better my understanding of how different countries conduct business.”

In 2015, Lucy travelled through South-East Asia where she says, “my familiarity with life was completely disrupted, but I loved every second of it.” Since then, she has looked for opportunities to leave the comforts of home once again, immerse herself in an entirely new culture, push personal boundaries, and experience more of the world.

Willy Sin is a second-year computer science student. Willy also has his own front-end web development and IT support business, and has worked with local companies to improve their Google rankings, fine tune point-of-sale systems, improve security measures, and enhance digital menu systems. This will be Willy’s first co-op work term.

“I love to travel but I have never worked outside of Canada. This opportunity seemed very interesting because it combines something I love with something I’ve never experienced before,” said Willy. “This placement will help me better understand the niche that combines the tech sector in India with the tech sector in North America.”

Lucy and Willy begin their four-month work placement in New Delhi, India in January, 2018.
