Announcement: New Division Chairs Appointed

Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of five new Division Chairs at the College, all of whom will hold two-year terms, effective May 1, 2018 – April 30, 2020:

  • Darren Bernaerdt – Division Chair, Creative Arts and Industries

Over the past 20 years at Langara, Darren has taught in the Publishing and Professional Photography programs, as well as in Continuing Studies. He has been active on a wide range of committees and has helped develop a new program and re-design a second. Seeing our students pursue their talents and achieve their educational ambitions have been key aspects of his goals.

  • Ryan Cawsey – Division Chair, Applied Sciences

Ryan joined Langara in 2008 as an Instructional Assistant and later as Instructor in the Kinesiology Department.  He served as Assistant Chair from 2012-2016, and has served as Department Chair since 2017.  Ryan’s area of academic training is biomechanics, with a focus on the mechanics and energetics of walking.

  • Nora Franzova – Division Chair, Mathematics and Sciences

Nora has been at Langara since 2002 as a faculty member in the Mathematics and Statistics Department.  She has served as a Math Core Coordinator, Assistant Chair Liaison and more recently, as Department Chair since 2015.

  • Tess MacMillan – Division Chair, Humanities

Tess has been with Langara for over 15 years, teaching in the English Department and serving as its Department Chair from 2011 to 2017.  She also took on the job of Coordinator in the Langara Writing Centre.

  • Wanda Pierson – Division Chair, Nursing

Wanda began at Langara in 1989.  Besides significant experience as a nurse educator working in both theory and clinical courses in a variety of terms, Wanda has also held a number of Nursing leadership roles.  She was Curriculum Coordinator when Langara delivered the Collaborative Curriculum and Chair of the Nursing throughout a period of intense growth as the Department moved to granting the BSN.

These appointments are consistent with the recommendations of the respective recommendation committees, which reviewed applications for each of the five division chair positions.

Division Chairs play an important role in the success of the College.  With this in mind, I would like to extend sincere thanks to the outgoing Division Chairs, namely, Tomo Tanaka (Creative Arts), Roger Semmens (Humanities), Robin Macqueen (Health Sciences), Gerda Krause (Mathematics and Sciences), whose service and dedication in the past years have helped the College advance towards its academic goals.

I wish each of our newly appointed Division Chairs all the best in the critical academic leadership roles they will play at the College.   Please join me in welcoming them.

Ian Humphreys, Ph.D.
