Oct 1 – Commemoration for Genevier Sullivan

Hello there,

The start of a new academic year is an exciting time of new starts and fresh starts for students and employees alike.  Sadly, this fall, we are missing one of those eager faces, Genevier Sullivan. It has been nearly six months since her passing and I still see her on the walkways, in her plaid. Truly Genevier touched many lives, especially within the Langara Community.

Genevier loved being outdoors, in nature, except for when she was homeless – that was her joke. I felt that it was important that we not forget Gen, her story and her impact on the campus. After Gen’s passing, I wanted a garden bench in her memory, even if I had to bring one in myself. The generosity of the College, through mental health funding, and the hard work of the Moira Gookstetter from the Langara College Foundation provided for the installation of a memorial bench on the east-west walkway, before the pond on September 17th. Gen’s bench, set beneath an umbrella of trees, has an incredible view of the pond, surrounding greenery, and the newly raised Musqueam house post. I can see her sitting there, nodding her head in approval, gazing upon the cultural and natural elements that grounded her.

To commemorate the installation of the bench, we will be holding a short ceremony at 11:30 am on Monday, October 1st at the bench location.  It would be great if you could join us.  If not, I hope you make the time to stop by the bench to rest your feet and your soul, during these busy days, and take in the beauty that surrounds you.

Please feel free to share, as you see fit.

Hope to see you soon.
