The Joint Benefits Committee, comprised of representatives from Langara College (CUPE, LFA, LCAA, and Executive), Vancouver Community College, and Western Compensation and Benefits Consultants, met on Tuesday, November 27th to discuss changes in insurance premiums. The following changes were recommended and approved:

  • AD&D Insurance – Increase of 24%
  • Extended Health Benefit – Increase of 1% (Decrease of 4% for CS Leap)
  • Dental Insurance – Increase of 18% (No Change for CS Leap)
  • STD Insurance – Increase of 6% for LFA

Employee paid premiums:

  • LTD Insurance – Increase of 7%
  • STD Insurance – Decrease of 3%
  • Voluntary Life Insurance – No Change

These rates will be in effect as of December 1, 2018.

*You will notice that employee paid premiums for Short Term benefits have decreased by 3%; however, employee paid premiums for Long-term Disability benefits have increased by 7% effective December 1, 2018. This calculation is based on a number of factors including the number of approved claims as well as the amount of time individuals remain on disability leave. This coverage is critical in supporting faculty and staff experiencing health issues that prevent them from attending work. The College works closely with employees on disability leave and supports return to work initiatives that allow employees to rejoin the College when medically able. If you have any questions, please contact Nav Dhaliwal, Coordinator, Workplace Reintegration and Attendance Promotion.

The College will continue to offer preventative wellness programs/classes (Yoga, Pilates) and workshops and events that offer advice on early detection of medical issues (wellness fair, breast cancer detection workshop, smoking cessation, etc.) for more information on these initiatives, please click here.
