Back to school events recap

January is almost over and we want to say thank you to the community for helping welcome our students back to campus. Here’s a short recap of some events we held for new and returning students:

We started 2019 off right with the first ever January New Student Orientation.

The Office for Student Engagement welcomed 113 new students to our community on January 7 and 8, 2019 at New Student Orientation hosted by RBC.

The fantastic peer-to-peer program featured student leaders, a student emcee, and a student panel. The event would not have been possible without the amazing GO Team: our orientation volunteer team. 21 volunteers contributed an impressive 154 service hours, the financial equivalent of more than $2,000.

Clubs Day and Clubs Mixer builds community and skills.

35 clubs hosted tables at Clubs Day on January 15, 2019. The foyer was a buzz of community-building conversations and student engagement.

Club representatives collected hundreds of names to add to their memberships and the day was an overwhelming success.

In the evening, 34 student leaders attended the workshop-styled Clubs Day Mixer sponsored by RBC. The Office for Student Engagement presented on how to engage and retain new club members and RBC promoted two upcoming free professional development workshops for students.

VOLT Speed Connecting introduces students to opportunities in the community.

26 students rotated around the room to connect with 12 community organizations on January 17, 2019. Student and organization feedback spoke to the success of the event with one student writing, “Every student should attend this event … it was easy to connect with various volunteering opportunities”.

Organizations in attendance (alphabetical order):Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver, Burnaby Family Life, Chimo Community Services, Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers, Multicultural Helping House Society, Vancouver Aquarium/Ocean Wise, Red Cross, South Vancouver Community Crime Prevention Society, The Arthritis Society, Tong Louie Family YMCA, UVOLUNTEER, and Vancouver Pride Society.

We look forward to working with you on more events this semester!
