May 30 – Book reading from Lindsay Wong

Dear colleagues,

Meet and hear from Lindsay Wong, local author of “The Woo-Woo: How I Survived Ice Hockey, Drug Raids, Demons, and My Crazy Chinese Family” at the Burnaby Public Library on Thursday, May 30 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. Wong will read from her memoir, talk about her unique experience, and take questions from the audience.

Wong describes her family’s fear of the “woo-woo” as Chinese ghosts who come to visit in times of personal turmoil, the effects of which she witnessed and endured as young as six, when her mother tried to light her foot on fire to rid Wong of demons. Later on, Wong also started to experience symptoms of the woo-woo herself.

In an October 2018 Q&A with The Vancouver Sun, Wong says:

“To my knowledge, there’s been no memoir written on mental illness in Chinese families in North America because it’s such a heavily tabooed subject. I wanted to show readers what happens when mental illness isn’t diagnosed and develops over a lengthy period of time.”

This is a free event but space is limited so register here to reserve your seat.

Hope to see you there!
