Do you enjoy thinking about what others say as much as they enjoy arguing their own views?
The Langara College Department of Philosophy invites you to attend Philosophers’ Jam, a forum for the expression of provocative ideas. This dialogue series is intended for people who want to discuss ideas but whose busy lives prevent them from signing up for a credit course.
Philosophers’ Jams are free and open to all Langara faculty, staff, and students, as well as anyone in the Vancouver community. Bring a friend or colleague and see you at the next Jam session!
The Boundary Problem for the Special Moral Status of Persons

Many people accept the view that persons enjoy a special and equal moral status that is greater than that of non-persons. I argue against this view. Many of the central capacities thought to be required to be ‘a person’ admit of varying degrees. We need an account of where the boundaries of moral personhood lie. I argue that attempts to justify these boundaries are either morally arbitrary or lack sufficient justification.
Dan Hooley is an Instructor in the Philosophy Department at Capilano University. His main areas of interests fall in ethics and political philosophy.
