Calling Langara instructors! Earn $500 by reviewing an open textbook in your field.

Open Langara is partnering with BCcampus again to offer Langara instructors a $500 honorarium to review a textbook in the BC Open Textbook Collection.

Unlike commercial textbooks, which are protected by traditional copyright, open textbooks are openly licensed and free for all to use. Open licenses allow educators to retain, reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute content (popularly referred to as the 5 Rs of Open) without payment or permission from the copyright owner.

For a limited time, Open Langara is matching BCcampus’ $250 honorarium, for a total of $500 per open textbook review (subject to availability, so apply early).

Instructors do not have to be using an open textbook to qualify for the honorarium. In fact, this is the perfect opportunity for those who are new to open education to explore open textbooks in their field.

What textbooks are eligible for review?
Browse titles in the BC Open Textbook Collection for your discipline. Click on a title that you are interested in reviewing. If you see the Request to review this textbook link at the bottom of the page, the textbook is eligible for review.

What criteria must I meet to serve as a reviewer?
You can serve as a reviewer, if:

• You have identified an open textbook in your field that is eligible for review (see above);
• You have not previously reviewed a textbook in the BC Open Textbook Collection. (To ensure a diversity of voices in the reviews, BCcampus limits the number of reviews to one per person.)

Is there a deadline?
BCcampus requests that you complete your review within three months from the date your application is approved. Reviews must be submitted to BCcampus by February 28, 2020 to be eligible for the $250 honorarium from Open Langara. If you submit your review after this date, you may still be eligible for the $250 honorarium from BCcampus, but not the additional money from Open Langara.

When will I receive my $500 honorarium?
Once your review has been accepted and published by BCcampus, you will receive your honorariums from both BCcampus and Open Langara. BCcampus cheques take an average of 4-6 weeks to arrive and Open Langara cheques/auto-deposits may take up to two weeks.
