College identity update

Since Musqueam honoured us with the name snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓, we have been working in collaboration with them to integrate our new name in to the way in which we identify the College. That work involved:

  • Gathering input from Musqueam councillors, Langara elders, students, faculty, staff, and leaders.
  • Collaborating with language experts at Musqueam and type designer Veronika Burian to create an extension to our Adelle brand font for the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language.
  • Creating a new set of brand guidelines and templates for the College.
  • Sharing that work with our College Board, Senior Team, and College leaders.

Dual Branding Strategy
I am very pleased to let you know that we are now ready to share that work with the College as a whole. We are taking a dual branding approach, in which both names will be used together on our materials. Neither name is primary nor secondary – they are equal.

Transition Support
Communication Officers will be meeting with their clients in the coming weeks to update you on the new guidelines, answer any questions you may have, and assist your department with the transition. The changeover will be gradual – as you need to update or replace materials, we will apply the new standards to that work. It would not be environmentally nor financially responsible to throw out materials that are still current, so there is no need to immediately update everything.

Getting Started
To help you get started, we have created updated templates for course outlines, reports, powerpoint presentations, memos, and digital letterhead, which you will find in myLangara under College Forms, Templates, just as you always have.

To assist you with updating your email signature, we have created a new email signature tool, which you can also access through that same section of myLangara (College Forms, Templates). For security reasons, please do not share the link to the email signature generator with anyone who is not an employee of the College.

Many employees have asked us about the correct pronunciation of our Musqueam name. The phonetic spelling provided to us by the late Elder Henry Charles is “sa-nay-with lay-lum”. You can hear a recording of Henry pronouncing the name here.

In the coming weeks, you will also see the College website updated to incorporate our new identity, and we are working with Purchasing on implementing the revised business card design with our printing partner.

More information about our brand and the new guidelines is available on the Communications & Marketing department website.

If you have any questions, please connect with the Communications Officer for your area.
