Important reminder: Beware of ransomware

We would like to remind you of the dangers of ransomware as cyber security is becoming a critical issue, both locally and globally. Ransomware is a type of malicious software that infects a computer and restricts users’ access to machines until a ransom is paid.

Recently there have been multiple ransomware attacks known as Petya, WannaCry, WannaCrypOr and Wcrypt, which are being covered by numerous media sources.

How does ransomware work?

Ransomware enters computers through attachments in emails or by visiting websites with malicious code. It can spread quickly throughout our entire IT system encrypting our data so it is no longer accessible. A ransom (usually in bitcoin) is demanded by the hackers to gain back access of our own data, which could take months to decrypt and clean up. As a result, our systems and data could be severely compromised.

What can you do?

Look out for vague “click here” links or buttons on websites and in emails. Be cautious when you see links or attachments coming through your inbox from senders you don’t recognize. If you receive an email asking for any personal information, delete it immediately and call Langara IT at 604.323.5999 (press option 3) or tell us online.

What are we doing to protect our systems?

We are in the process of updating security patches to our IT systems to reduce the risk. We are also monitoring our IT system logs for anomalies and will be engaging with a third-party cyber security company in case additional services are needed.

Thank you for your vigilance.
