Bike to Work Week spring 2018 wrap-up

Langara College has participated in Bike to Work Week since the event’s inception in 2007. This year, Bike to Work Week ran from May 28–June 3.

As in previous years, Langara College hosted a Celebration Station on Wednesday, May 30, where cyclists were treated to refreshments courtesy of Facilities, bike mechanic services courtesy of Erik Price at VanCycle Mobile Bicycle Shop, giveaways courtesy of Communications & Marketing and the Langara Bookstore, and prize draws. The Station saw 234 cyclists in its two hours of operation on a sunny afternoon.

Langara College also fielded a team of employees that cycled to work and logged their rides in a friendly competition against 900 other workplaces.

During Bike to Work Week, the Langara College team of 48 people, made 322 one-way bicycle trips and cycled 2,861 kilometres, which exceeds the distance from Langara College to the US-Mexico border.

The team’s effort burnt 85,865 calories and kept 622 kilograms of greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.

The Langara College team had the 21st highest number of kilometres cycled among the 901 organizations participating and bested teams from BCIT, Vancouver Community College and Capilano University.

The 2018 Bike to Work Week winners of the Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC) gift cards courtesy of Facilities are:

  1. Merike Bruen
  2. Meaghan Rafferty, and
  3. Milo de Villiers

Great job to everyone who participated during the 2018 Bike to Work Week!
