Jul 1 – Landfill ban on styrofoam takes effect

In an effort to divert recyclable materials from landfills, Metro Vancouver has introduced a landfill ban on styrofoam packaging that will come into effect on Sunday, July 1, 2018. Once in effect, the College will be responsible for ensuring that all styrofoam is properly collected and sent to a facility for recycling. Failure to comply with the landfill ban will result in financial penalties for the College.

Langara has been recycling styrofoam packaging for several years now, where it is collected in our Recycling Depot and picked-up by our recycling haulers. All employees are reminded to bring your styrofoam to Shipping and Receiving or call for pick-up assistance going forward.

Certain types of styrofoam are not included in this ban, such as food and beverage containers, packing peanuts, and soiled/treated materials.
