Information for VPD investigation

Dear colleagues,

You may hear news reports that the Vancouver Police Department issued a media release this morning asking for public assistance in an investigation.

The Police are asking for the public’s help after reports that a child was sexually assaulted last Wednesday in South Vancouver.

On December 5, a six-year-old girl was allegedly lured from the playground at Sexsmith Elementary School on Columbia and West 59th Avenue by a stranger. She was taken to a nearby location where she was assaulted before he walked her back to the school. The VPD news release indicates the suspect is described as a darker-skinned man, approximately 30-years-old, with brown or grey hair. He was wearing grey pants. Please see below for further details from the VPD.

Detectives from VPD Sex Crimes Unit are looking for dash-cam footage from anyone who may have been driving in the area between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on December 5. Specifically, police are looking for footage from anyone driving in this area: West 58th Avenue along the north, West 60th Avenue at the south, Ontario Street to the east, and Cambie Street at the west.

Anyone who may have been in the area on last Wednesday afternoon and saw anything suspicious, is asked to call detectives in VPD’s Sex Crimes Unit at 604.717.0603 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477.

If you walked the golf course at lunchtime on Wednesday, December 5, or have dash-cam footage from that day, please contact the VPD immediately.

Thank you.
