Fall 2019 Bike to Work Week Wrap-Up

Langara College has been participating in Bike to Work Week, a biannual event, since 2007. The 2019 fall version of Bike to Work Week ran from Monday, October 21 to Sunday, October 27.

On October 22, a sunny Tuesday afternoon, the College hosted a Celebration Station where cyclists were treated to refreshments courtesy of Roots Café and Facilities; bike mechanic services courtesy of Erik Price at VanCycle Mobile Bicycle Shop; bike lights courtesy of Communications & Marketing; draws for a Mountain Equipment Coop gift card; and a Continuing Studies gift certificate. The station was run by VOLT volunteers and saw 168 cyclists in two hours of operation.

The College also fielded a team of employees in a friendly competition against other workplaces. During Bike to Work Week, 39 members of the Langara College team made 232 bicycle trips and cycled 2,170 kilometres. Their efforts burnt 65,109 calories and kept 471 kilograms of greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.

Langara’s team had the 11th highest number of kilometres cycled among the 700+ organizations that participated and was third place, behind UBC and BCIT, in the post-secondary institution category.

Moses Lam and Kathy Hanson won $50 Mountain Equipment Coop gift cards courtesy of Facilities and Anne DeWolfe won a gift package from the Langara Bookstore for logging rides during the fall Bike to Work Week.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Bike to Work Week this fall. See you next time in spring.
